A modest proposal

This was disturbing, but I was very relieved when I realized that it was a joke, but a long and drawn out joke at that. The speaker identifies himself as a wealthy Protestant somewhat against the poorer Catholics, and certainly their children. I think that Swift is much more discreet about his possible hate toward the Catholics, where as the speaker is filled with disdain towards the Catholics and wants to give their infants to the rich Protestants to be a luxury food. Luckily as the story goes on you can tell that the speaker is joking about it and making a mockery of the crazy things that people say or believe about other people who are different from themselves. This would have been targeted to the Protestants because even though it is a joke i still think that it's disturbing and offensive to the Catholics and poor Irish. I think that "A modest Proposal" shows that people have always said crazy things against other groups of people that are ridiculously stupid but there are still people out there who will cross that line. It is a Juvenalian Satire because it's making fun of hummanity's will as a whole. Politcally, considering that there is still fighting between the Northen Irish Protestants and Catholics, this story also goes to show that bloodshed isn't worth the hate and that there definetly are men and women in Ireland who think that way, but it's stupid and not everyone is that ridiculous.

And Swift would have been concerned if you didn't find it horrifying. It is our shared sense of morality that makes this satire so effective. Perhaps it isn't funny in the way that The Onion often is, but his point is not to amuse but to ridicule the current practices by the wealthy nobility and their treatment of the poor in Ireland. By considering this absurd solution, we must consider a situation that could produce such a "modest proposal.
